Renting a CO2 cannon from a manufacturer is a different experience than renting one from a general AV company. CryoFX has been in this specific industry for over 15 years. The equipment comes from our own inventory, not a third-party supplier's catalog. What a CO2 cannon rental from CryoFX includes

A standard CO2 cannon rental from CryoFX includes the cannon itself, the hose with all fittings attached, and CO2 washers. The washers matter more than most renters realize, the CGA 320 CO2 fitting uses a left-hand thread, and the seal on that connection is made by the washer, not the threads themselves. Run it without a washer and your tank bleeds out slowly before you ever fire the cannon.

 

CO2 tanks are optional. You can source them locally yourself (siphon CO2 tanks only, more on that below), or CryoFX can arrange them depending on your location. Tank options include a twenty-pound CO2 tank, a fifty-pound CO2 tank, and in some markets, sixty-pound or seventy-five-pound tanks. The twenty-pound CO2 tank and fifty-pound CO2 tank are the most widely available across the country.

 

One of the advantages of renting from CryoFX versus a general AV or production rental company is the knowledge base. General AV companies have broad inventory and limited depth. They might have a CO2 cannon in their catalog and no one on staff who can troubleshoot a DMX signal issue or explain why a siphon tank matters. Rental pricing and why no fixed price is published

CryoFX doesn't post a fixed rental price because multiple variables affect cost, and quoting a number that doesn't apply to your event doesn't help either side of the conversation.

 

Here's what goes into the price:

 

Equipment type. A standard CO2 cannon rents at a different rate than an LED jet or an XY-axis moving head. More features mean higher replacement value and more complexity in setup.

 

Hose length. Longer hoses add material cost. If your setup requires 100-foot runs from the tanks to the cannons, that's different from a 25-foot DJ setup.

 

Quantity. More units affect packaging, shipping, and logistics coordination.

 

Tank supply. If CryoFX is arranging CO2 tanks, that's a separate line item. If you're sourcing your own tanks locally, the rental price reflects equipment only.

 

Duration. All rentals include a minimum of 2 days. You're not billed for transit days in either direction.

 

Time of year. Holiday weekends command different pricing than standard weekdays. July 4th, New Year's, and 3-day weekends see higher demand across the board.

 

Event type. A corporate event with a controlled setup is different from an outdoor festival with stage access requirements and CO2 truck backup.

 

For a single CO2 cannon rental on a standard 2-day window, typical pricing ranges from $175 to $275 per unit depending on the model. Some specialty models run higher. The only way to get an accurate quote is to share the specifics of your event.

 

Operator options: self-operated vs CryoFX-staffed

Some clients want to run the equipment themselves. Others want a fully staffed, hands-off production experience. CryoFX offers both.

 

Self-operated rentals work well when the client understands CO2 equipment, has experience connecting siphon tanks, and is comfortable with DMX control if that's part of the rig. CryoFX provides the equipment and enough information to set it up correctly. This option is cost-effective for clients who've done this before.

 

CryoFX-staffed events are the right call when there are multiple moving parts and the client wants a single vendor to handle logistics, tank delivery, setup, operation, and strike. CryoFX operators know when to hit the effect, how to stage the CO2 for maximum visual impact, and how to troubleshoot anything that comes up mid-show. This option is consistently used for larger productions, festival stages, and venues where the CO2 system is a central part of the performance.

 

The threshold where CryoFX operation starts making sense: when the event has more than 4-6 CO2 jets, when tanks need coordinated replacement during the show, when the client has no prior experience with CO2 effects, or when the production budget can absorb a staffed vendor.

Delivery, setup, and logistics

Las Vegas warehouse pickup: CryoFX has warehouse locations in Las Vegas. Pickup is available but must be booked in advance, including the specific pickup time. Equipment is spread across multiple warehouse locations, and in-house transfers take time to prepare. Walk-in pickups don't work. Book in advance, schedule your pickup window, and allow 15 minutes at the warehouse for handoff. The location displayed publicly may not be where your specific equipment is, internal logistics determine which warehouse handles your pickup.

 

Shipping: CryoFX ships equipment nationwide. In most major cities, same-day or next-day shipping is possible in urgent situations, though the cost reflects that urgency.

 

Lead time recommendations: For large events, festivals, multi-stage productions, high-quantity rentals, book at least 30 days out. For standard rentals, 2 weeks is the target. Shorter notice is possible but affects availability, pricing, and logistics flexibility. CryoFX has moved quickly on short-notice requests when conditions allow, but early booking consistently produces better outcomes on every variable.

 

Return shipping: CryoFX provides return shipping labels. Repack the equipment in original packaging, use the provided label, and coordinate the drop-off or pickup according to the instructions in your rental agreement. Transit days are not counted against your rental window.

 

Common rental questions

Does CO2 trigger fire alarms? Standard fire alarms, photoelectric, ionization, and laser-based, detect smoke particles or combustion byproducts. CO2 is neither. A standard CO2 cannon will not trigger standard fire alarms in normal operation.

 

What CO2 can trigger is a CO2 safety alarm. Some venues, particularly those with specific occupancy or industrial requirements, have CO2 concentration monitors installed. These are separate systems from standard fire alarms and are set to alert when CO2 reaches dangerous atmospheric concentrations. If your venue has CO2 safety monitors, the fire department may require specific protocols around their use.

 

CO2 does not produce smoke, does not combust, and does not interact with smoke detection systems. This is one of the reasons CO2 is widely used in enclosed venues like nightclubs, arenas, and theaters.

 

Do you need a permit to use CO2 cannons in Las Vegas? Yes. Clark County, Nevada requires a permit for any CO2 cannon use indoors, regardless of whether the equipment is handheld or stage-mounted. The calculation for permit approval is specific: the fire department takes the cubic footage of the stage area only (length × width × height, with a maximum height calculation of 10 feet) and determines whether the CO2 output per activation stays within safe atmospheric limits for that volume.

 

The audience area is excluded from the calculation, which is actually a conservative approach, it ensures the math is done on the smallest relevant space rather than the entire venue. Other cities should check with their local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), typically the fire department or fire prevention bureau. NFPA and international fire codes govern CO2 as a compressed gas, and local jurisdictions may layer additional requirements on top.

 

What tank type is required? Siphon CO2 tanks are required for all CO2 special effects equipment. A standard upright gaseous CO2 tank looks identical from the outside but produces no visible effect. The siphon tube draws liquid CO2 from the bottom of the tank, and liquid CO2 is what creates the dense white plume when it exits the nozzle and meets the air.

 

If a client sources their own tanks and brings non-siphon tanks to the event, the equipment will appear to work, it will fire and vent gas, but there will be no effect. CryoFX has had rentals where the client sourced their own tanks, brought the wrong type, and attributed the failure to the equipment. The equipment was fine. The tanks were wrong. This is the most common point of confusion in the entire rental process.

 

What are the largest rental packages CryoFX has executed? Festival packages. CO2 tank transport, what you need to know

This section applies to anyone transporting CO2 tanks themselves, whether for a rental or a purchase.

 

Federal DOT regulations prohibit transporting more than 1,000 pounds of CO2 in a single vehicle. For reference, a fifty-pound CO2 tank holds 50 pounds of CO2. Ten of them is 500 pounds of CO2, inside the limit. Twenty is 1,000 pounds, at the limit.

 

Beyond the weight limit, the safety rules matter regardless of quantity:

 

Do not transport CO2 tanks in a closed trunk or a hot vehicle. CO2 tanks are pressurized to 850-900 psi at normal temperatures. In a vehicle parked in the sun, interior temperatures can climb high enough to cause a tank to rupture or vent the pressure relief. A tank rupture inside a vehicle is catastrophic. The tank should ride with windows open and in a ventilated space, not in an enclosed trunk.

 

CO2 tanks should always be secured in an upright position during transport. An unsecured tank that falls and breaks the valve off the top becomes an unguided projectile. This is not a theoretical risk, it has caused serious injuries at events where tanks weren't properly secured.

 

CO2 also accumulates at floor level. It's heavier than air and displaces oxygen in low-lying areas. A large number of tanks in a poorly ventilated space can create an asphyxiation risk before anyone notices anything is wrong. Always keep CO2 storage areas ventilated.

 

OSHA sets a short-term exposure limit (STEL) for CO2 at 30,000 ppm (3%) over a 15-minute window. At 1,500 ppm, CO2 monitors should trigger a first-level warning and the effect should be paused to let the space clear. At 3,000 ppm, evacuation is required. For reference, normal atmospheric CO2 is around 400-600 ppm. A single twenty-pound CO2 tank fully discharged into a small enclosed space can reach dangerous concentrations faster than most operators expect.

 

CO2 monitoring is required for any permanent install and strongly recommended for any event using significant CO2 volume. Sensors must be mounted 12 inches or less from the ground because CO2 is heavier than air and concentrates at floor level.
