CO2 Jet DMX Controller: Stage Cannon Control and Programming

The controller is the bridge between whoever calls the show and the valve that fires it. A clean control chain makes a CO2 jet the most reliable fixture on the rig: one function, on or off, every cue identical. A messy one has you chasing a jet that won't fire at load-in while the DMX itself was fine all along. DMX 512 in one paragraph

DMX 512 is the lighting industry's control protocol: one data cable, 512 channels per universe, each channel carrying a value from 0 to 255, over 3-pin or 5-pin XLR, daisy chained fixture to fixture with a terminator at the end of the chain. Every fixture listens at its assigned address. A CO2 jet is the simplest fixture on any rig: its fire channel reads 0 as closed and anything past the threshold as open.

 

Channel maps by jet

The CryoFX DMX 512 jet takes one channel with quick single digit addressing on a numeric panel. The 2-channel jets (the Co2 Cannon Basic and Plus among them) add a burst-duration channel: channel 1 fires, channel 2 sets how long the jet stays open before it shuts itself off, with the 0 to 255 fader range dividing into 6 steps of about 42 values, each step adding roughly a second. That second channel is a consistency tool; every blast lands the same length no matter whose thumb is on the fader. The controllers CryoFX supplies

Programming a console

Build the fixture profile simple: one slider per channel, 0 to 255, no dimmer curve on the fire channel, because the jet has one function and a curve just delays the click. In GrandMA that means a generic custom fixture with X sliders for X channels, 0 off, 255 on, or fire past a threshold of 10 if the operator wants a dead zone at the bottom of the fader.

 

ShowXpress, Resolume, and anything else that outputs DMX 512 patches the same way. Two timing habits worth stealing: LEDs on one second before the CO2 and held 6 seconds after, and blast lengths coded on the duration channel rather than trusted to the operator.

 

The faults, in the order we actually find them

Address mismatch first. Dimmer curve on the fire channel second. Bad cable third, proven by swapping with a working fixture's run. Then the converter chain, which is where the real time disappears: 3-pin to 5-pin to RJ45 and back again, and every long troubleshooting session in CryoFX history has ended at an adapter that didn't carry the signal cleanly. Test every converter before doors.

 

Then the universe itself: fog machines and some pass-through boards inject noise that causes misfires downstream, which is why CryoFX runs every special effect (jets, cold sparks, fog, flame, confetti) on its own isolated universe with 120-ohm terminators and warning labels on the dedicated power and DMX outlets. Daisy chain power and daisy chain hose runs follow the same tidy discipline down the line. Cabling and connectors, the boring saviors

The signal chain is only as good as its metal. Use real DMX cable rather than mic cable (the impedance difference causes flicker and misfires on long runs), keep 3-pin and 5-pin sorted with quality adapters tested before doors, and land power on the same discipline: PowerCon or locking connectors, daisy chain power sized to the combined draw, and no consumer power strips buried behind a stage.

 

Quick connectors on the CO2 side keep hose swaps fast, and the foot hoses between a manifold and its jets stay strain-relieved so a tug on a hose never becomes a tug on a jack. Label both ends of every run. The 10 minutes of tape at load-in is the hour you don't spend at 10 pm walking a dead line.

 

On the shopping list side: a small rig needs one controller, one terminator, cables with 20% spare length, and a relay pack only if a valve jet is in the mix.
