Power CO2 Jet: The High-Output Stage Sfx Cannon For Clubs And Festivals

"Power CO2 jet" means one of two things, and we settle which on every call. The first meaning is literal: a jet that runs on power alone. No DMX board, no LCD, just a valve that opens when it gets voltage and closes when it doesn't. CryoFX sells plenty of these as valve jets, in 12 and 24 V DC and 110 and 220 V AC coil options, and they're the right unit when a show controller, relay, or inline switch is doing the firing. Plug one into a switched power strip and you have a working CO2 jet in standard mode with no DMX mode needed.

 

The second meaning is the interesting one: a jet with more output than a standard unit. At CryoFX that's the quad jet and its bigger siblings, and the output is something you have to see in person to calibrate to.

 

The quad jet and the 5-valve

The quad jet packs 4 valves and 4 nozzles into a frame roughly 18 by 24 inches. All 4 hoses connect across the back, all 4 nozzles fire from the front, and the unit mounts to structure or stands upright on a stage. Minimum supply is 4 tanks, one per hose, and the output is a wall. In a club it reads as an entire side of the room dumping CO2 at once; outdoors it's a massive cloud climbing off the stage. A second floor-standing quad variant takes its hoses from below for stage-lip positions.

 

The 5-valve unit outruns it. Five hoses, five valves, and because CryoFX valves and hoses carry a larger orifice than competing equipment, the combined output beats similar products at the same tank count. We've also built single 20 mm orifice valves fed by 5 hoses for outdoor work, which is how you get a cloud that swallows a festival main stage.

 

Throw scales with parallel setups, and it flattens. One hose, valve, and nozzle: 35 to 50 ft. Double it and gain a few feet. By 4 or 5 setups you're at 75 to 90 ft, and past that the curve goes flat. Where these deploy: festival main stages, stadiums, outdoor events, and a set of controlled tests and special applications we can't describe.

 

Where they mostly don't deploy is indoors in the United States; a quad blast puts enough CO2 into a room to concern any CO2 monitoring, and though no CryoFX power jet has ever tripped a client's alarm, the design phase is what keeps that record intact. Why a bigger orifice alone does nothing

The upgrade conversation we have most often starts with a client wanting a larger orifice valve on their existing single-hose setup. We walk them through the math before we'll take the order. The CGA tank fitting is the choke point of the whole system at about 3.5 mm. A CryoFX hose runs 10 mm, the standard valve runs 10 mm, and on a short hose the valve empties the line instantly and then pulls through that 3.5 mm fitting, so a 15 mm valve changes nothing.

 

What changes output is the whole path: a longer hose acting as a reservoir, more tanks feeding the line (each fitting adds its 3.5 mm to the combined flow), non-restrictive fittings, and then, only then, a larger valve. One client heard this and still wanted the big valve because more hoses and tanks were coming later; that's a fine reason, and we sold it. The system holds constant pressure regardless of valve size; raising output takes more feed.

 

Setup and supply

A quad on a festival stage runs 4 hoses to 4 tanks staged at the tank farm, stage left or right, one spare tank standing by. Heavy activation schedules move to daisy chain hoses with multiple tanks per line, and festival-scale programs move to a pump or a CO2 truck.

 

Power is whatever the coils need, daisy chain power runs down the line the same as any DMX 512 fixture chain, and a truss clamp mounting point with a steel base plate option covers rigging. Deploying one: the festival pattern

A quad deployment follows the same field pattern every time. The unit mounts at its position (stage left and stage right of the main PA hangs are the classic spots), 4 foot-hose runs drop back to the tank farm, and the tanks stand strapped with a spare tapped beside them. Power daisy chains down the line on locking Neutrik True1 connectors, DMX arrives on the dedicated effects universe, and the LD gets one instruction: this fixture consumes 4 tanks of CO2 at the same rate a standard jet consumes one, so the cue list gets built around the big moments rather than sprinkled through the set.

Two operating notes from the field. First, local gas suppliers near festival sites run out of siphon tanks on show weekends, so the tank order goes in when the quad gets booked, never the week of. Second, a warranty claim on a power jet almost always traces to supply rather than the unit: undersized hoses, starved lines, or non-siphon tanks that arrived mislabeled. Verify the supply and the equipment takes care of itself.

 

A note on stage placement: quads read best with distance. Stage left and stage right positions angled slightly off-axis give the room a crossing pattern that a single center quad can't, and the individual button control most clients add lets an operator fire one side, the other, or both, which triples the vocabulary of one purchase.
